Allusion in literature is when the author refers to great works, people, and events. This is usually not an accident. The allusion I picked occurs on pages 164 and 165 of the book Speak under the category Oprah, Sally Jessy, Jerry, and me. Allusions are used many times throughout these pages one was “I take two Tylenol and eat a bowl of pudding. Then I watch Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood and fall asleep. A trip to the neighborhood of make believe would be nice. Maybe I could stay with Daniel Striped Tiger in his tree house” (Anderson 165). Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood was a children’s show in the 1960’s. It depicted an older man and his imaginary village with multiple makes believe characters. He was referenced in the book Speak to show how Melinda would rather be in an imaginary world than be in her own.

Allusion is a reference to other great works, people and events that is not accidental.
ReplyDelete“Mr. Freeman is the Vogue Teacher of the Moment. There are rumors that he’ll be the Teacher of the Year in the yearbook”(Anderson page 77).
Mr. Freeman is Melinda’s art teacher. He is portrayed in the novel as an amazing author who can do incredible things. One of his paintings put people in awe because they didn’t know what was coming next.
Vogue is described as being favorable. It is something popular and fashionable. There are Vogue Magazines that show the latest trends in fashion and lifestyle. It makes sense that Laurie Anderson would refer to Mr. Freeman as being vogue because he is extremely popular to his students because they enjoy his class so much. He also has a great sense when it comes to art. Mr. Freeman is definitely a favorable teacher.
