Reading Assignment #3

In an interview, Laurie Halse Anderson shares some of the her traits that Melinda's character is based on.  Read her response below.  Then comment on this post with any similarities you see between yourself and Melinda.  Cite at least one specific quote from the book that supports that aspect of Melinda's character.

  1. I don't have anything in common with Melinda or the author. I have been going to Meadows Valley for most of my life and i don't feel awkward or out of place here. mostly everybody is very nice.

  2. I feel somewhat similar to Melinda and the author, i dont feel that I fit in or that I am accepted by many. Also I have moved around so many times in my childhood that I am very formiliar with the foreign and scary feeling.
"The kids behind me laugh so loud i know they're laughing about me" (Anderson, 4).

  3. I do have a few things in common with Melinda and the author. I can be an obnoxiuos at times. But i mostly compare with Melinda. I am quiet when i want to be. I dont have many friends, mostly aquitences. I am just not the one person who can get accepted. But i do love where I am here at Meadows Valley.

    1. " When people point at me or whisper as i walk past, I wave to imaginary friends down the hall and hurry to meet them." (Anderson, 33)

  4. I feel like I don’t have a whole ton of similarities as Melinda, but my father is actually a terrible cook as well; he can only make salmon good. When I think about appearances I think that I have chapped and cracked lips, I don’t appeal in any certain people’s eyes; I’m not trying to fish for compliments. I also came into high school with no friends. I also hate having any mirrors in my room, this summer I took the mirror off my wall and put it in my closet facing the wall (not even kidding), but that’s only because I’m scared of seeing things in mirrors. “I get out of bed and take down the mirror. I put it in the back of my closet, facing the wall.” She is afraid to see herself.

  5. I do not have many similar traits as Melinda; however, I do have many similar experiences as she does. Even though I have been going to Meadows Valley for most of my life, I only feel somewhat accepted by a select few people. I have had some very bad personal experiences, so the way people are so harsh can be really hard on me.
“I want to confess everything, hand over the guilt and mistake and anger to someone else”(Anderson p. 51).

  6. Based on the interview with the author, I cannot find anything in common. I haven't started out in a new school since Pre-School so I can't really relate. Melinda feels out of place and without friends a lot in this book, and I don't relate to it like others do. "I close my eyes, this is what I've been dreading. As we leave the last stop, I am the only person sitting alone" Anderson 3).
