As you read, consider the following, then comment on this post with your numbered thoughts
- What is Melinda’s mood as the book begins? As you read the first section of Speak list reasons why you believe she might be feeling this way.
- Melinda repeatedly alludes to an event that occurred in her recent past. What do you think may have happened to her?
After you read, answer the following in a notebook but do NOT post your thoughts on the blog.
- Melinda categorizes the Merryweather students into several groups: jocks, cheerleaders, human waste, suffering artists, Goths, etc. Do you think these categories actually exist in real high schools? Do they exist in our school? Why or why not?
- Melinda lists "THE FIRST TEN LIES THEY TELL YOU IN HIGH SCHOOL" -Do you think that all of these are lies? Which do you disagree with her on?

ReplyDelete1. I believe Melinda is uncomfortable with her surroundings and would rather be in another place. She is lonely and mis-understood for something that may have happened in the past. From what i have read not a lot of people like her for some reason and her best friend seems to have rejected her and set her aside not wanting to be her friend anymore. She may be feeling this way because her friends hate her, everybody seems to hate her, she is an "outcast", or she may regret doing what she did.
ReplyDelete2. Well from what i have heard around school and in class is that she was sexually abused or raped. Causing her to call the police and get a bunch of her friends at a party into trouble.
1. Melinda seems to be frightened and worried about the beginning of a new year, her first, in high school. She obviously has a reason to feel this way, for she states she had been dreading that very event, when she only got glares from the people who are supposed to help and support her. She calls herself an outcast because she has no one to socialize with, no clique to join. Her friends have abandoned her, and each other. But most of all she feels pained, her best friend has completely left her for the wolves. The one person that is supposed to stand by her, to hold her hand when the going gets tough and to be like a sister through thick and thin, has disappeared. And shows resentment to her, which is one of the biggest heartbreaks to feel; Abandonment, mistrust, and torn.
ReplyDelete2. Melinda has hinted to her past, saying she wanted to tell Rachel, her “ex-friend,” which appeared to be a big deal. And because I have read the reviews and heard some input from other high school friends, I have the idea, that it is rape.
I agree with the idea that Melinda was probably raped.
Delete1. Melinda seems nervous and scared to see the people she has not met yet; some of the people she has met but is scared to communicate.
ReplyDelete1. She is entering a new school.
2. She believes she is an outcast because she has no friends on the first day of school.
3. She doesn’t think she can fit in a clan because she doesn’t have the up-to-date stuff.
2. I think she may have done something bad or changed her ways and her peers and friends did not like that.
I disagree with the fact that she doesn't think she can fit in because she doesn't have up to date stuff. From what I read, it reads as though she fit in before, but she ticked her friends and peers off to the point that she was exed from all social interactions.
DeleteI agree with Emily. She does hint at not having the up-to-date clothes and such as the other girls, but that never mattered before. I think she feels she is an outcast, because she is being outcast from all of her friends because they are holding a continuous, unnecessary grudge.
Delete1. I think Melinda isn’t completely depressed, but she definitely isn’t happy. I don’t blame her; having all of your friends hate you isn’t exactly a day brightener. From the looks of it she seems unhappy because:
ReplyDelete• Her friends hate her for a reason that seems not her fault.
• Her parents fight somewhat frequently.
• Something traumatic happened to her in order for her to make her friends hate her.
2. I think that Melinda had to call the police on a party because she had to. As in, something so bad happened where she feared for her life, or was raped.
I agree with you completely. I think Melinda is not being treated fairly at all, because no one will take the time to learned about what really happened at that party.
DeleteMelinda is dreading going to school. It is only the beginning of her freshman year, but it sounds like things are not going to go well. I think she feels this way because:
ReplyDelete>She is fearful that all of her old friends will hate her.
>Something happened prior to the school year that caused a lot of severe drama that is centered around her.
>She is an outcast.
> Her parents do not seem to get along and her family does not seem to be close.
>No one will take the time to listen to her and get the details on what really happened.
2. I think something very bad happened to her. From what I have researched prior to reading the book, she called the police on a party. Also from hints in class, I think she may have been sexually abused. Her friends were most likely at the party where this unfortunate event happened and therefore, got in trouble when she called the police, but they refuse to listen to her and get the details about what really happened at that party.
I agree, i would also have that feeling if that certain event happened to me.
DeleteMelinda is not very fond of her new year. It is the her first day starting as a freshman in highschool. She has the feeling that people are going to hurt her. She has become an outcast due to her friends leaving for new social groups and she is not involved in any.She started to feel insecure when she has been violated sexually at a party last year. Due to this result, she has called the cops and had the man arrested. Nobody seemed to believe her. I now know why she was nerves when she started highschool.
